01/12/06 - '06 Season Review
Following their outstanding first year in Formula BMW with 3rd position finishes in both driver and team championships; Team Filsell Motorsport took on two rookie drivers for the 2006 season, Daniel (aka Danno) Murray and Roger Orgee.
With their first taste of formula racing, 2006 was naturally going to prove to be a dramatically different season with a steep learning curve laying ahead for the two new drivers. Multiple race winner Matt Howson was also to make three race appearances with the team to enable him to qualify for the World Formula BMW Finals in Valencia in November 2006 and he was also on hand as driver coach for Danno and Roger.
The first few race meets provided consistent if unspectacular results for the rookies as they began to develop their racing skills; however Matt joined the rookies for rounds 5 and 6 at Oulton Park. He drove a brilliant first race crossing the finish line in 1st place; however he was controversially disqualified by the race judges for jumping the start.
Two top 10 placings in rounds 6 and 7 and a win for Matt in round 8 at Brands Hatch showed just how competitive the Team Filsell BMW is.
Roger's performances with the team saw him leave midway through the season believing that he would find better results elsewhere, yet his race results failed to improve.
Danno however benefited immensely from the teams experience and driver coaching available, pushing him to an 8th position at round 18 at Knockhill. He also put in two strong performances at the final race meeting at Silverstone and drove well at the World Finals, proving to be one of the top UK drivers.
Matt too had a great start at the World Finals but regulations forced Matt to change his racing seat as his head was deemed to be too proud of the cockpit. The result had the disastrous effect of injuring Matt's back and ruling him out of the competition.
Team Filsell Motorsport is looking forward to an exciting 2007 season with the prospect of competing in both Formula BMW and Formula Renault championships. This will be the first season for the team to enter the Formula Renault Championship. Matt Howson's exploratory outing in a Renault at the last race meeting at Silverstone yielded an impressive 10 th position in race 2, a fine achievement for both car and driver.
